Get More Speaking Gigs Write a One-Sheet

Get More Speaking Gigs Write a One-Sheet One of the best free ways to market your personal brand to your target audience is to take on speaking engagements in your field. I do this quite a lot in the London meetup circuit and I would like to share some tips on how to get booked to talk. When you speak before a group of people, you generate lots of interest and you will have plenty of opportunities to chat with potential employees, customers, partners, investors etc. Compare this to a normal meeting where you do your pitch to one or two people, it’s obviously more efficient to do it to ten or twenty prospects in one go. Expert status: By giving talks on specific topics you establish yourself as an expert or even a thought leader. Being seen as someone that really knows their stuff will lead to increased interest from peers and customers. The more you are seen, the more you are likely to be mentioned and interviewed in the media, both online and offline. If you have a site or a blog, you will notice that your visitor stats can skyrocket after a good speech. Your increased exposure will in turn lead to more enquiries, business and hopefully allow you to increase your rates. How to get speaking engagements: How do you pitch yourself and your speaking prowess to meetups, seminars and conferences? You obviously have to find out who does the bookings of speakers. The best way to convince this person to book you is by sending over a speaker one-sheet, basically a one pager outlining what you talk about and why they should book you. Just like a resume is screened by an employer, the speaker sheet will be reviewed by the event planner and it needs to provide this person with enough compelling information to get you booked in. Here are the main five bits of content your speaker fact sheet should contain: Name and photo You will need a photo that brings out your personality and stays consistent with the topics you are proposing to speak about. The photo is critical to your personal brand as images tend to be remembered long after the text. Topics and benefits What exactly do you speak about? List a few of your ‘greatest hits’ talks and how they were received. What are the benefits to the audience, why do they need to listen to you? You can write what problem you are looking to solve and what others thought of your presentations. Bio The short biography will tell the reader what you have done in the past, what makes you an expert on your topic and where you have spoken recently. Just like your normal bio, make sure to stay concise, write what you do for others and back it up with evidence. Drop any prominent names that you think could be familiar to the reader. More on bios at 8 Steps To Writing a Professional Bio. Contact information Your call to action has to be followed up with your contact details. Give the reader a range of options to contact you (phone, email, site, social media etc) so that they can use their preferred method. Testimonials This is where you let others sing your praises. List quotes from previous event planners and even audience members. Make sure to include glowing testimonials from a diverse set of people, so that any reader will be able to relate to the feedbacks you have received. Final Note Having a great looking speaker one-sheet doesn’t mean you now should spray and pray it to every event planner in town. Take your time to research the individual and personalize your message as best you can. Follow up with a phone call to make sure they have received it and to create some urgency. Best of luck with your speaking campaign!

What Apartment Shopping Taught me about Careers

What Apartment Shopping Taught me about Careers Dear Apartment Gods,   Please, oh please let us find a dog-friendly 2 bed/2 bath within walking distance of the L. Wed like parking included. We also wouldnt mind granite counter tops, stainless steel appliances and wood floorsequal sized bedrooms and new bathroomsoh yeah, and keep us way under budget and within  4 block  s of the park.   With Love, Nicole Katie Im moving.       First let me say that apartment shopping is a HUGE pain in the butt. While I have loved seeing Katie almost every day for the past two weeks, along with the past two  Sunday mornings (not a pretty sight),  Id prefer not to see her under these circumstances.   If you can imagine it, our apartment search consists of us driving the wrong way down one-way streets, relying way too heavily on my iPhone map to navigate our new neighborhood (which quite frankly is embarrassing considering we have lived here for 4 years), getting lost again,  being scared to get out of the car at places listed as a great deal!, jumping into car after working with someone who had quite possibly used illegal substances right before our appointment, (theres no doubt that guy HATED us)you get the idea. We know exactly what we want.   But finding it is another story. We find a place with the space we want, but it is 150 years old and falling apart.   We find a gorgeous place that is modern and in the perfect location, but one bedroom is as big as a closet  and doesnt have  a window.   I think if Ive learned one thing over the past year, its that you just cant have it all. Perhaps this is a simple concept to most, but  it wasnt  for me.   I really thought you could have it all in an apartment, in a job,  and in just about everything else.   Perhaps you are your own worst enemy, striving to have it all in a world where perfect just doesnt exist. My apartment search has mirrored that of job seeking and ones career: it is  almost impossible  to find the whole package without a flaw.   And at some point, you just have to pick one and go from there. Letting go of perfection is bound to give you a happier and more fulfilling life and career.   Embrace the imperfections.   Give up on having it all.   Live the life you imagined and have fun doing it!

Love Him or Hate Him - Floyd Mayweather Jr - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Love Him or Hate Him - Floyd Mayweather Jr - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Personal wealth is just a small piece of your personal brand success pie. If you maximize opportunities while in the spotlight then most likely financial benefits will follow. And we know that the spotlight shines just as bright on a villain as it does on a hero. Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. has amassed great personal wealth through combining extreme skill with a love-to-hate persona within his sport. At 35, Mayweather is a man who wears multiple hats â€" boxer, businessman, and sole self-promoter, all of which brought in $85M last year and landed him a ranking of #1 in Forbes Sports 100 athletes. His business acumen and knowledge of the revenue stream within boxing lead to the creation of Mayweather Promotions, allowing him full control of the income flow. In doing this he is able to provide himself with 100% of the revenue generation from his fights, versus the 40-50% that other boxers get. The key to the income generation is viewership of his sport. Mayweather has proven that he knows what drives people to pay for this luxury in mass â€" the promise of a good fight blended with a lot of dramatic flair. His dramatic flair has caused a lot of love, and a lot of hate. Loving to hate Fans can be just as passionate about wanting to see someone fail and struggle as they are about another’s success. It’s the Tiger Woods in golf analogy. Mayweather is one of the most hated in boxing at his own doing. He created the persona and works tirelessly to fuel the fire because he knows that people will pay for the chance to not only witness his greatness, but also his failure. For every hater there is a fan just as fierce in his or her appreciation. This appreciation is showcased in his social media presence 3M Twitter followers and 1.4M Facebook fans. Mayweather is one who knows the benefits that social media activation can provide. His involvement allows him and his team to control messaging and shower his fans with appreciation. The look/feel can definitely use some work and investment but his personality shines through and gives his fans what they want â€" an unapologetic glimpse into the life of an undefeated, trash-talking boxer who is close friends with 50 Cent and had Justin Bieber ringside. Mayweather’s unapologetic nature, and “life as an open book” living, borders on contrived authenticity. People love seeing real flaws in others, especially those in the spotlight, and Mayweather plays that to an extreme. His issues, whether legal troubles, past rants, or family disputes have always been on display without the normal spin doctoring seen from other celebrities. It is worth pointing out though, that we are talking about boxing, a sport where more leeway is given for behavioral issues than in other sports. Mayweather is who he is, and while he apologizes for certain incidents, he never apologizes for himself. In recent years, Mayweather has increased his charitable donations exponentially (Food Banks, Susan G Komen, Habitat for Humanity $50K+ each) and it will be interesting to see what personal changes come out of this most recent jail term. As someone who has as much charisma, drive and influence as he does, it would be nice to see him use his platform and wealth to leave a positive legacy in his sport, community, and the business of athlete self-promotion. Then again, this is boxing, and Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr has certainly proved that balancing out the good with the bad is exactly what his audience not only wants, but expects. 10 Tips for English Students Who Want to Be Journalists

10 Tips for English Students Who Want to Be Journalists So we’re almost four months into 2013, and whether you’re in your first, second or third year, it’s never too early (or late) to start planning for your future career. Especially if that career is in something as competitive as Journalism, with a lot of people wanting to get into relatively few openings! An English degree is a good start, but it’s worth doing everything you can to get ahead of the crowd. Here are 10 great ideas that will give you that extra competitive edge and help you get your foot on the Journalism career ladder… 1. Network Most jobs aren’t found through advertisements or agencies, especially in competitive industries where each job advert gets hundreds of responses. Having contacts is imperative, so attend all the talks and join all the societies so you can to start building some bridges. 2. Intern Early A summer internship is a great foot in the door, and although most companies hire students for placements during or after their second year, it’s never too early to start applying for them, even if you’re still in your first. 3. Learn To Research Journalism is as much about research as it is about the ability to write. If you’re writing something factual, the emphasis is always on getting the right facts in the right context between slickly constructed sentences. 4. Blog! Having your own space to sprawl out your thoughts is useful for building an online presence, and for developing your writing. Just don’t let it sit there and gather dust: set yourself deadlines and topics to write about to help sharpen your skills. 5. Keep Current If you’re looking to cover something dynamic like fashion or technology, always take the time to cover new developments. You can even revisit or expand on older pieces so you’re ahead of the curve. Plus, it’s good practice if you end up staffing a retractions desk. 6. Volunteer Especially in digital media, content is a buyer’s market. Finding blogs or local papers that need volunteer contributors can demonstrate a good work ethic and build up a body of published content, as well as letting you develop your style in the print world. 7. Become an Entrepreneur If you have a niche interest or you can’t find the right outlet, why not start your own? If you want to become a writer, you should get involved in the business side of media. Generating content is useful, but with the mindset to manage or monetize written content you’ll look even better to employers. 8. Try Anything If you’re interested in lifestyle journalism, always be open to new things. Editors love to have someone they can confidently send to cover different events, especially on smaller papers where you might be seeing local plays one week and reviewing a wine festival another. 9. Keep Your Essays If you’re looking to get into the more academic side of journalism, it’s worth remembering that over the course of your three years, you should be building up a solid collection of referenced critical writings that you can carve up for examples if you’d like a career writing in this manner â€" but only the best ones, mind. 10. Persevere Journalism is a tough industry with a lot of people trying to get in, and a lot more are trying to get to the top. Bear this in mind if you find yourself struggling to find opportunities. Times are tough, but something can only stop you if you let it. If you’re an English undergrad with some other ideas, or an industry insider with some advice, why not drop me a comment below?

6 Careers for Those that Like to Drive - CareerAlley

6 Careers for Those that Like to Drive - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. If youre looking for a new career, and have been driving to work every day anyway, you might not realize that youve already got skills that can get you a job behind the wheel. Not everyone likes to drive, so those who do, and can stand doing it for whole shifts, there are jobs out there that can turn into lifelong careers. Some may require special licensing, but having your normal operators license is the necessary first step for all of them. These careers can range from long distance, to just around the block, but all of them have you keeping busy by keeping you on the road. Bus Driver This is for sure one that youll need a different license for, but there are also multiple ways you can do it. If you like driving long distances, then driving a coach to casinos is a great gig, and youll get to meet people along the way. You could even do bigger drives across the country which will give you a chance to travel somewhere new. Theres also the local transit route. Being a public bus driver also means youll meet tons of people, and probably have some regulars. This is always a much shorter distance though, and youll get the bearings of the area youre working in. Photo by Andre Benz on Unsplash Taxi Being a taxi driver may seem like getting barked at by New Yorkers and flagged down by people half in the street, but thats of course, only if youre in New York City. For some people, that can be fun, and it means youll be working all day, but in smaller cities, taxis can be a calmer situation. Not everyone likes to drive, so those who do, and can stand doing it for whole shifts, there are jobs out there that can turn into lifelong careers. Tweet This If youve ever needed a taxi in a small town, its not as simple as going on the street and finding one. For the most part, its all getting called and going to make pickups, which means fewer bodies jumping out in front of your vehicle, and a less stressful day. Uber and Lyft An option that is similar to driving a taxi, is driving for rideshare apps. This way, you dont have to be a part of a company and can work on your own terms. But, you dont get the fancy cars with the partition, and the point of sale is not happening in the vehicle with you, which some people would prefer. One of the best benefits of driving for Uber and the reason why I put it first. How many jobs can you say will let you choose your own hours to work? Whether its 2 hours a day or 10 hours a day, you choose how many hours you want to work and what time you want to work. becomearidesharedriver.com If thats no issue for you, then now is a great time to get into that career. More and more people are ditching their cars for public transit and ride shares, so this job has all sorts of opportunity. Its also great because this helps elderly folks who cant drive get around, but thats not the only job that can do to help the elderly. source Trucking Another way to see the country is through trucking jobs. This will also require a different kind of license, but SteelPro is ready to take on new drivers immediately if youre interested. This would be long nights, often overnights, but you get plenty of alone time and you can travel to far places you probably didnt think youd end up seeing otherwise. With Steelpro, the dispatcher is on 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so you can drive on whatever schedule works for you. Driving Instructor If you really do love driving and want to keep the roads safe, you could become a driving instructor so that youre teaching the next generation of drivers. Of course, most of the time youll be the passenger, but you can flex your driving knowledge and pass it on so that your way of doing things is the norm. You can be your own boss if you start your own driving school as well. This is another social job because youll be in a car with a new driver almost all the time, so of course, youve got to talk, but thats what can it make fun and rewarding. Photo by Jerry Kiesewetter on Unsplash UPS/Delivery Lastly, theres the delivery option. This is also different from driving a passenger car. Very different if you count the constantly open door with UPS as odd. With this job, youll get to be alone just like with trucking, but on a much smaller route, which means you dont end your day away from the family or your friends. People are ordering things online now more than ever so delivery drivers are essential to getting people those packages quickly. Its a fast-paced career, but if youre up for the challenge then these career options are for you. What's next? Ready to take action? Choose the right tools to help you build your career.
